HOOSH
HOOSH is a not-for-profit organisation based in Homebush that provides out of school hours care for children in primary years. Once a week, I'm involved in helping the staff at HOOSH supervise the children who attend the centre. The activities they do are diverse, ranging from basketball, table-tennis, football and handball to arts and crafts, doing homework, or just watching a movie. It's a really enjoyable CAS experience which helps to develop my skills when working with younger children, as well as my ability to communicate with them.
HOOSH Experience Details
Planning Details:
To organise this CAS experience I needed to contact the after school care at Homebush and ask if they needed any volunteers. After this was done (and they said yes), I had to determine which afternoon I would attend each week, and then I needed to do follow through with what we had planned. Please see the CAS calendar for specific dates.
CAS Learning Outcomes:
Learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I’ve always enjoyed working with kids, and this activity will certainly be focused on that. I do think that I can improve my communication with younger kids, which this experience will certainly develop.
Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
It’s always challenging trying to deal with many kids in one place, and trying to organise them effectively will certainly be a challenging experience. This will ultimately mean that I’ll develop some new organisational skills.
Learning outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
This CAS experience is organised completely independently of the school, and so I needed to find a suitable service that required volunteers, initiate contact with them, and ask if I could volunteer there. I then had to plan when I would attend.
Learning outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
I’ll be carrying out this CAS activity every week for a year, so it requires quite a high level of commitment.
Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
This outcome is not relevant to this experience.
Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
This outcome is not relevant to this experience.
Learning outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
This outcome is not relevant to this experience.
