Athletics Experience Details

Planning Details:

Once the training schedule is released, I will attend the relevant training sessions as well as the invitational carnivals on Saturdays leading up to the AAGPS carnival.

CAS Learning Outcomes:

Learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I’d thrown the shot put in the past, so my technique for that is quite solid. However, I’d quite like to try and run in this year’s AAGPS carnival, so I’ll have to develop my running ability and overall fitness.

Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

I’ve undertaken a new challenge in trying to run in the athletics carnival, rather than just throw, and so in training for that, I’ve been able to develop new skills that are necessary for that event.

Learning outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

This outcome is not relevant to this experience.

Learning outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

This outcome is not relevant to this experience as the athletics season is quite short.

Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

This outcome is not particularly relevant to this experience as athletics is purely individual. However, the individual points score contribute to the team’s overall point score, which is what determines the placing of each school, so it’s still important to have a team-based attitude.

Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This outcome is not relevant to this experience.

Learning outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

This outcome is not relevant to this experience.

Athletics is a co-curricular activity that takes place between the winter and summer seasons of sport; so for me, that's between my football and cricket commitments. It is only a short season, given that we need to start training for cricket straight after it, and are playing football right up until a few weeks out from the AAGPS Athletics Carnival. At the carnival, there are a huge variety of events, with running from 100 to 3000 metres, hurdles, shot-put and the jumping events. It's an incredible day, with thousands of boys from the GPS schools all at one place, and gives all the boys competing a chance to do so in front of close to 10 000 boys; something that we'll probably never have the opportunity to do again in our lifetime. It's always a great day, both in the stands and on the track, but it is particularly enjoyable to be a part of the competition.

AAGPS Athletics Results

I threw in the U17 division shot-put, and placed 6th.
